WBC Names Haney A ‘Champion In Recess’ At 140

The WBC has named Devin Haney a ‘Champion in Recess’ at 140, as Alberto Puello becomes the full champion.

The decision comes after Haney‘s undefeated 31-0 record was reinstated once Ryan Garcia received a one-year ban after testing positive for Ostarine. Haney had been ordered to box Sandor Martin; his WBC is mandatory at 140. But Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn failed to make a purse bid. Meanwhile, Top Rank was the only bidder, winning a $2.42 million bid. Hearn was not interested in the fight, leaving Haney disappointed. The Dream also stated that he wanted to take the year off, forcing the WBC to act.

Puello defeated Gary Antuanne Russell in his last fight. He has been ordered to defend against Martin. The winner will then be ordered to face Russell. While Haney could fight Puello, that fight is unlikely to sell. Once Haney decides to fight, he could pursue big fights at 140 against Teofimo Lopez or Isaac Cruz, who hold the WBO and WBA belts. Alternatively, Haney could move up to 147 to target a fight with WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios
