WBC Orders Alycia Baumgardner vs. Delfine Persoon

The WBC has ordered Undisputed Super Featherweight Champion Alycia Baumgardner to face her mandatory Delfine Persoon, with purse bids set for Friday.

Baumgardner’s previous fight was a unanimous decision win over Christina Linardatou last July. The result was clouded by mass controversy with Baumgardner’s failed test for Mesterolone and Methenolone. The boxer tested positive following a urine test on July 12, three days before her fight.

But Baumgardner provided a negative sample after the fight and one before the bout on June 16. The news of her failed test only came out in August. She questioned the findings and promised to prove her innocence.

The Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission removed her suspension, overturning the decision by The Association of Boxing Commissions. Baumgardner was initially cleared by the WBC. It rejected the idea that she had taken the substance intentionally. While she is free to box, Persoon is a tough opponent. She has five wins in her last six fights, including one no-contest. But at 39, she will face a hungry Baumgardner who will no doubt want to prove her critics wrong.
