WBC Orders Haney vs. Martin

The WBC has ordered Devin Haney to defend his WBC Junior Welterweight Title against Sandor Martin.

Haney retained his title after the loss to Ryan Garcia because King Ry came in 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound limit. Garcia’s failed positive test for Ostarine may also see the result turned into a no-contest. The B sample will be tested on May 22, with Haney hoping that his undefeated record will be reinstated.

The purse bids for the Martin fight will take place on June 18. Haney’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, could offer Martin step-aside money, allowing Haney to pursue a unification at 140. The Martin fight will struggle to sell. However, unification fights are possible against Teofimo Lopez (WBO belt), Isaac Cruz (WBA belt) and Subriel Matias (IBF belt). But based on his mindset, Martin is ready to take his shot.

“This is the first step for an opportunity that I have been waiting for all my life. I know that I am not going to fail, I know that I am going to be a world champion and I only hope that everything continues on its course to see my dream come true,” Martin said
