WBC President Declares George Kambosos Jr ‘Undisputed Champion’
While many boxing fans have been taking credit away from George Kambosos Jr following the Australian’s upset win over Teofimo Lopez, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman thinks otherwise.
The sanctioning body’s head feels that Kambosos is the “undisputed lightweight champion” after clinching IBF/WBA/WBC Franchise/WBO 135-lb belts in late November.
“Kambosos defeated [Teofimo] Lopez, who defeated [Vasily] Lomachenko, so I do believe is due recognition as undisputed champion and great fights to come,” he said.
“Devin Haney has the WBC lightweight title, he’s a pride WBC champion, he has grown into being a tremendous champion.”
Haney and his team had been claiming that the 23-year-old was the true lightweight champion, but Sulaiman’s statement indicates that the WBC doesn’t intend to make a Haney vs Kambosos super fight anytime soon.
This could be a major blow for Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn since he has been trying to set this fight in early 2022.
Kambosos has already shown that he should not be underrated against any lightweight. He continued his unbeaten streak against Lopez where he was considered a heavy underdog entering into the fight.
However, he survived a 10th-round knockdown to beat Lopez via unanimous decision. This was unarguably the biggest win of the Australian star’s career so far.
