WBC President Speaks On Canelo’s Performance Against Callum Smith
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has given his take on Canelo Alvarez’s performance against Callum Smith.
Canelo recently challenged Smith for the WBA (Super) and The Ring Super-Middleweight Titles. The vacant WBC gold was also on the line. Canelo was able to nab the unanimous decision victory after turning in a dominant performance.
Sulaiman recently gave his two cents on Canelo’s title-winning efforts on fight night (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“[Canelo] achieved another resplendent glory this past Saturday by dominating and overwhelming British Callum Smith at the Alamodome in San Antonio. A superb promotion with spectacular production, an extravaganza that wraps up a complicated year for the world of sports.
“Canelo conquered the vacant super middleweight championship of the World Boxing Council, thus achieving supreme triple WBC champion status, adding this Green and Gold Belt to the super welterweight and middleweight championships he had achieved over the years. Canelo began his career and grew through the WBC platform and its affiliated championships. WBC Youth world champion, NABF and WBC Silver champion served as his preparation to reach with maturity the world stage.”
The WBC has named Avni Yildirim the mandatory challenger for the WBC gold. Yildirim must receive his title opportunity within 90 days, otherwise, Canelo would be stripped of the WBC Title. Canelo has told Boxing Scene and The Athletic that he wouldn’t mind fighting in February.
It would be a quick turnaround for boxing’s top star, who had a 13-month layoff before returning to the ring to face Smith. Be sure to keep it locked on FIGHT SPORTS for the latest updates on Canelo’s next move.
