WBC President Urges Rival Mandatories To Box-Off To Get A Shot At The Unified Champions
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has told the rival governing bodies to line up their mandatory contenders against each other. This would make it easier for the undisputed and unified title holders to maintain their status.
The number of title unification has been an interest in recent years.
Currently, the roster has three undisputed champions: Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo and Devin Haney. These developments have happened due to the consistent meetings between the rival governing bodies.
Now, Sulaiman believes that they should go one step ahead and lighten the number of required defenses that the titleholders need to come up against.
“We are doing our best to make sure that the mandatory contender is of the highest value,” Sulaiman. “I have discussed within the organizations to do elimination bouts within mandatory challengers. Then the unified champion would not have to face mandatory after mandatory.
“That will take time. Hopefully, everybody will be on board to make it happen, but the WBC is doing its best to continue along this path.”
“Having so many champions with different organizations, the quality in the challengers can often dilute. We must be careful that a mandatory challenger from any organization should be a real challenge for a unified champion.”
