WBC President Wants Canelo Alvarez Back Inside The Ring
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman is hoping that Canelo Alvarez can get back to action soon.
Alvarez hasn’t competed since November 2, 2019. He defeated Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round via knockout to capture the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship. Canelo has since vacated the title to return to Super-Middleweight but he’s in an ongoing dispute with DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions.
With Canelo’s lawsuit, it has left many to question when boxing’s top star will put his gloves back on to compete. Sulaiman spoke to Josue Villa and expressed his desire to see Canelo fight again at the earliest time possible (via BoxingScene.com).
“Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is definitely the greatest attraction in world boxing. He is already going to complete a year without getting into the ring. Obviously, the pandemic is the main problem. But he is eager to get in there. He is in a legal situation with Golden Boy and DAZN. Let’s hope they reach a friendly agreement and that Canelo returns to the ring as quickly as possible.”
The WBC recently approved a vacant Super-Middleweight Title fight between Alvarez and Avni Yildirim. A purse bid was originally scheduled for September 21. That was pushed back to October 6. The purse bid has been extended once again to 15 days.
“Understanding the current situation of WBC Franchise champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, the WBC in good faith extends 15 days and for a final time the purse offer ceremony for the Alvarez vs Yildirim fight, for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight title.”
