WBC Set To Order Shakur Stevenson Vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko
The WBC is set to mandate a bout between Shakur Stevenson and Vasiliy Lomachenko for the vacant belt at 135.
The impending decision arrives following Devin Haney’s decision to move up to 140 and fight Regis Prograis for his WBC belt.
In the process of doing so, Haney will avoid his WBC mandatory Shakur Stevenson. The ‘Dream’ will become a ‘champion in recess,’ leaving Shakur up against the next highest-ranked contender, which is Lomachenko.
“The WBC mandatory challenger in the lightweight division is Shakur Stevenson. The WBC Board of Governors voted in favour of: granting Haney’s petition to fight Champion Prograis for the WBC super-lightweight world championship.
“Placing Haney as ‘champion-in-recess’ in the lightweight division. Ordering a bout between lightweight mandatory challenger Shakur Stevenson and the highest available contender in that division,” WBC
If Lomachenko were to swerve Stevenson, then ‘Sugar’ Shakur could face the following contenders: Isaac Cruz, William Zepeda or Frank Martin. Either way, Stevenson has a big fight lined up.
