WBO Orders Fundora vs. Crawford, But Spence Eyes The Title Shot

Paco Valcarcel, the WBO President, has mandated Sebastian Fundora vs. Terence Crawford.

The announcement follows Fundora’s split decision victory against Tim Tszyu, making him the WBO and WBC Junior Middleweight Champion. The WBO rules state Crawford is the mandatory, given he is the WBO Super Champion at 147. However, following Fundora’s win, Errol Spence Jr. jumped in the ring, indicating his desire to take that fight instead.

Fundora must vacate the WBO title to face Spence, allowing The Truth to fight for his WBC belt. That would leave Crawford facing Josh Kelly for the vacant WBO Junior Middleweight Belt. Fundora’s promoter,  Sampson Lewkowicz, wanted Spence, who is seen as the bigger name.

“He [Tszyu] will get a rematch, but not now. Now, I need to maximize the most money for the fighter. I believe he deserves it. That is correct. Crawford will not sell out 90,000 people in Dallas. Yes [Crawford is the better fighter], but everybody waits. Why not Crawford? Let him wait one time or maybe twice, and then he go,”  Sampson Lewkowicz (Fundora’s promoter)

However, Fundora’s comments suggested otherwise. The WBO and WBC champion wanted to face the best. Crawford is the best pound-for-pound fighter, having knocked out Spence in his last fight. The victory made him the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era, making him undisputed in a second weight class.

“Errol Spence is a great fighter, and it’s a match made in heaven, but Terence Crawford is the best fighter in the world. I would like to fight him. I’ve had a whole year. I’d been working on my defense, working on using my jab. It all came out in the fight. It’s about maximizing the profit for the fighter, and it would be stupid for me not to do that for him. Besides that, boxing is a business. Spence is a very good fighter anyway, especially at 154. So, I believe he will have a shot,” Fundora stated

Spence and Crawford exchanged words on social media as they face a battle to see who gets the Fundora fight.
