WBO Orders Saunders To Fight Lemieux
Quebec product David Lemieux was potentially going to be a featured bout on the card for Miguel Cotto’s next fight on December 2nd at Madison Square Garden. Yet, according to Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions, he may have a bigger fight on his hands.
According to Gomez, the President of Golden Boy Promotions who act as co-promoter of Lemieux, it seems that Billy Joe Saunders will be his next target.
“We just received a letter from the WBO and it’s been ordered that he has to fight (Billy Joe) Saunders as the mandatory. I’m going to start having conversations with Frank Warren.”
And while the December 2nd date at the Garden was floated for Lemieux, there was another rumor regarding an HBO date just for Lemieux on December 16th. When asked by Boxing Scene on Monday, Gomez explained about the fight and the potential of that December 16th date….
“Yeah there’s a possibility of doing it by December. It’s all negotiations, I’m going to start talking to Frank Warren and see what he has in mind. Definitely it can happen in December.”
“We would hope so, we would hope that HBO would support that fight…They’re in the Lemieux business. Lemieux’s been fighting well the last couple of fights, so yeah, I would think so.”
Saunders was victorious over Willie Monroe Jr. on September 16th by way of decision. It was Saunders’ first bout since 2016, when Saunders took a tough decision win over Artur Akavov.
If this fight with Lemieux is to take place, it would be the second defense of Saunders title since winning it in 2015. Some of the fights were cancelled due to injury, another with mandatory challenger Avantdil Khurtsidze was cancelled due to Khurtsidze being arrested on a RICO (organized crime) warrant.
While Lemieux (38-3, 33 KO’s) has been far more active. He knocked out Curtis Stevens in three back in March and then went ten rounds with Marco Reyes in May.
