Weidman, Gastelum Argue Over Title Shot
With UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker’s victory over Yoel Romero, who missed weight, at UFC 225, the question regarding the division now shifts to who is next in line for a title shot.
With Romero’s two losses to Whittaker and No. 2-ranked Luke Rockhold’s loss to Romero back in February — which was originally a title shot against Whittaker — the next top two ranked contenders are Chris Weidman and Kelvin Gastelum.
Weidman, the former champion, claims he is the most decorated guy in the UFC middleweight division. That claim led to Gastelum taking a shot at the Long Island native on Twitter, which Weidman emphatically responded to.
CHRISPY
If…
-your argument for consideration for a title shot is based upon being the “most decorated”, then Whittaker should fight the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center this Fall…— #OnAmission4Gold (@KelvinGastelum) June 13, 2018
😟Chrispy??? Now it’s personal…my argument is simple. I am ranked ahead of YOU and I finished YOU in my last fight. https://t.co/EaqAPvdINm

As Weidman points out in his tweet, he defeated Gastelum back in July 2017. But that was the last time he fought in the Octagon. And prior to that win, Weidman suffered three straight losses — starting with losing the UFC Middleweight Title to Luke Rockhold back at UFC 194 in December 2015.
Gastelum, meanwhile, bounced back from the loss to Weidman with a first-round knockout of Michael Bisping and a split decision victory over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, who is ranked No. 5 in the current UFC middleweight standings.
