Weidman-Romero II Was Almost Booked?

The Chris Weidman comeback story has been a long and tough road to travel down. A former UFC Middleweight Champion, Weidman is 1-5 since December 2015. Willing to do whatever it took to compete and win, “All-American” was considering risking it all.

Weidman (14-5) was supposed to face Jack Hermansson on May 2 at UFC Oklahoma City. However, like most recent events with the UFC, that was postponed for a future date. While the fight was postponed, there was a point in which Dana White believed events could have still went on. He still does with Fight Island, and if anything was to work out, Weidman would have had multiple opponents in mind.

The last one is extremely interesting. Weidman and Yoel Romero faced off against one another in 2016 at UFC 205. In New York City, Weidman got knocked out by a nasty flying knee that cut him open. It was his second loss in a row after losing his title to Luke Rockhold. The two never did meet up for a rematch.

Malki Kawa, Romero’s manager, stated that a bout with Weidman was discussed on Instagram Live. A Romero injury and the postponement of events stopped that from happening.

”They actually offered us Weidman for this next fight, but Yoel has an orbital eye injury, and I was waiting to see if I could get him cleared to fight May 9, and they canceled the event,” Kawa stated, via MMA Fighting.

Since the Romero fight, Weidman has attempted to come back in a major way. When he couldn’t get big wins in middleweight, he moved up to light heavyweight. It did not fair well for him as he got knocked out by Dominick Reyes in the first round of their bout. He then made his return to middleweight in an attempt to get back on track.

Romero (13-5) has gone 1-4 since then, with three title opportunities. His last bout was a unanimous decision loss to Israel Adesanya for the UFC Middleweight Title.
