Weili Zhang Reacts To UFC 261 Loss To Rose Namajunas

Weili Zhang has issued a statement following his title loss against Rose Namajunas.

This past Saturday night, April 24, Zhang and Namajunas shared the Octagon in the co-main event of UFC 261. The action was held inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Namajunas stunned Zhang with a first-round knockout victory to capture the UFC Strawweight Title a second time.

Following the defeat, Zhang took to her Instagram account say the following.

“I want to congratulate Rose on her victory. She bounced back from her defeat. I believe I will also come back, only beat a great champion, to become a legend, and beat a legend, I will become a new me. Before, my goal was to win the UFC championship, but today, I have a higher goal than that. Thank you! It’s normal to lose and win. That’s the UFC. Andrade, Joanna, Rose have all lost and they all come back and try again. I have deepened my understanding of UFC today. So I believe I can come back. Hopefully, the UFC will schedule a rematch soon.”

Zhang was riding a 21-fight winning streak. She hadn’t lost a fight since her pro MMA debut back in November 2013. Zhang was coming off her “Fight of the Year” performance against Joanna Jedrzejczyk back in 2020.

As for Namajunas, she has become the first two-time UFC Strawweight Champion. Time will tell whether or not the UFC will book an immediate rematch.
