What Are Plans For Future WBA And WBC Super-Flyweight Title Fights?
The sport of boxing is coming out of the gate with a vengeance after a brief down period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many promoters have had their hands full booking cards and trying to restore some form of normalcy. One of those promoters is Matchroom Boxing, helmed by Eddie Hearn. The promoter has a slew of fighters under its name including WBC Super-Flyweight Champion Juan Francisco Estrada.
Hearn spoke to ESPN and revealed plans for a mid-October event that will see Estrada put his gold on the line against Carlos Cuadras in a rematch. Also on the card will be a WBA Super-Flyweight Title bout between champion Roman Gonzalez and a challenger to be announced. WBC Flyweight Champion Julio Cesar Martinez will also put his gold on the line that same night.
“We have one card that will be in the middle of October, which will be [Juan Francisco] Estrada, ‘Chocolatito’ [Roman Gonzalez] and Julio Cesar Martinez.”
Hearn added that if both Estrada and Gonzalez emerge victorious in their fall bouts, then they “will fight each other in a unification fight in February or March of next year.”
The event is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The plan is to hold this card in the United States. There are some other plans in the works across multiple divisions in order to get some more title fights in before the end of 2020.
