What Big Fight Is Mikey Garcia Eyeing?
Mikey Garcia is aiming high when it comes to the future.
Garcia has had 41 professional boxing matches. His record stands at 40-1. His lone career loss was to Errol Spence Jr. via unanimous decision. Garcia rebounded with a win over Jessie Vargas in his last outing back on February 29.
In an interview with DAZN, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn revealed the big fight that Garcia has his sights set on (h/t Boxing Scene).
“Mikey Garcia is one of the fortunate ones that has boxed this year, so he’s not busting my phone up too much at the moment,” Hearn said. “But he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao. It’s very difficult to make those sort of fights at the moment, unless we get a big site fee from another country. Mikey is basically that guy who wants the monstrous fights, and he’ll be looking to make that happen.”
Pacquiao hasn’t competed since July 20, 2019. He defeated Keith Thurman via split decision to capture the WBA (Super) Welterweight Championship. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach isn’t optimistic about his fighter returning to the boxing ring in 2020. Pacquiao is busy serving as a senator of the Phillippines. Throw in the fact that there still aren’t many opportunities for a live gate with boxing events and you can see why the 41-year-old is in no rush to return.
Hearn said the top priority for most promoters is to get the big names out there at least once in 2020. He believes that those stars would benefit from having at least one fight this year to get paid and keep their names in the headlines.
