What Big Welterweight Fight Is Bob Arum Trying To Put Together For 2020?

Over the past few months, there have been talks regarding a clash between Manny Pacquiao and Terence Crawford. While the coronavirus pandemic may have slowed things down, there is still hope something can happen.

Top Rank’s Bob Arum ended up telling Boxing Scene that a bout between Pacquiao and Crawford could end up happening before the end of the year. This is something that has been a long time coming when it comes to planning. As far as when, Arum is hoping for November 14th or the 21st.

“The Pacquiao fight, obviously we’d like to do it,” Arum stated. “Whether we can do it, how we can do it, that’s what we’re figuring out now. Obviously, if it can happen it’ll happen, and if it can’t happen, it won’t happen. But nothing is concrete on that. We hope we can do it. We’re trying, but this is not a usual situation.

“We told Terence that he’s scheduled to fight in November. If it can’t be Pacquiao for various reasons, then we’ll match him with somebody else. But we told Terence to prepare for mid-November, whether it’s the 14th or the 21st.”

Pacquiao (62-7-2) is the current WBA Welterweight Champion, beating Keith Thurman in his last fight via split decision for the “super” belt. The 41-year-old is on a three-fight win streak. Top Rank last produced a Pacquiao fight back in 2018, when Pacquiao beat Lucas Matthysse via TKO in seven rounds. It was a comeback win following a controversial loss to Jeff Horn, also on ESPN programming.

With his busy schedule and the unknown when it comes to the coronavirus situation, Pacquiao is looking at all options when it comes to a potential location. MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons stated that the Senator of the Philipines wants to ensure everything will be set when it comes to a future fight.

“There’s a possibility [that Pacquiao will fight this year], but you’ve got to remember, there’s a lot of things that have to happen,” Gibbons stated, via Boxing Scene. “First of all, COVID-19 needs to rapidly get slowed down in the US or in Saudi Arabia, where we’ve had offers.

“Now, if somehow, Saudi Arabia, who has shown great interest in the Senator fighting there before COVID-19 hit, if they were to come around, that would be good for the Senator because he wouldn’t really have to miss that much time like he does, having to come to the US.

Arum has been hoping a bout between the two would involve fans to watch the event, no matter where it is held. Boxing Scene went on to say that Arum could end up looking outside of the United States for venue’s to host the fight as a result of maintaining a significant site fee.

Crawford (36-0) is the current WBO Welterweight Champion. “Bud” won his last bout in December over Egidijus Kavaliauskas via TKO. It was the third time defending the WBO belt he won from Horn back in 2018. The 32-year-old has been eyeing a bout between Pacquiao or Errol Spence Jr. for a while now.

If not Pacquiao, Kell Brook is also an option for Crawford. All of this depends on Crawford, however, as he is taking a stand by not fighting to avoid a pay cut.
