What Does Ben Askren Think Of Khamzat Chimaev?

Ben Askren has thoughts on Khamzat Chimaev and he isn’t sold just yet.

Chimaev has been riding a wave of momentum in a short period of time. His first two bouts under the UFC banner were just 10 days apart. In that span, he scored a second-round submission over John Phillips and a first-round TKO win over Rhys McKee.

Askren, who once competed for the UFC and is a former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder, appeared on Submission Radio. “Funky” expressed his belief that he isn’t sold on Chimaev just yet (h/t MMAJunkie.com).

“The hard part about it is, we saw him twice in the UFC. But the first guy he fought, John Phillips, he’s 1-4 in the UFC. So, he was very unsuccessful. And the second guy he fought was a new addition to the UFC. So, (Chimaev) has not won a UFC fight. And so it’s like, OK, well, he definitely smashed these guys, there’s no doubt about that, but are these guys Gerald Meerschaert-level competition? And the answer to that is no, they’re definitely not.”

Askren went on to say that he isn’t too sure about Chimaev as of now. He believes the bout with Meerschaert could answer a lot of questions.

Chimaev is scheduled to take on Gerald Meerschaert on Saturday, September 19. The bout will be part of the UFC on ESPN+ 36 card. If Chimaev emerges victorious, then the UFC has plans to book him against Demain Maia in Abu Dhabi. It’s safe to say Chimaev is being put in the fast lane and fight fans are waiting to see if he sinks or swims.
