What Does Canelo Alvarez’s Manager Think Of Relationship With Golden Boy?
Canelo Alvarez’s manager has thrown in his two cents on the relationship status between his fighter and Golden Boy Promotions.
Back in the fall of 2018, Canelo signed an 11-fight deal with DAZN worth a minimum of $365 million. Fast forward past the midway point of 2020 and things have taken a turn. Canelo is suing DAZN, alleging the executives at the sports streaming platform breached his contract. It was reported that DAZN was unwilling to pay a $35 million guarantee, citing the lack of top-drawing matchups.
Canelo’s manager, Eddy Reynoso, spoke to ESPN Deportes and chimed in on why his fighter also takes issue with Golden Boy (via Boxing Scene).
“It would be a lie to say that we have a great relationship [with Golden Boy]. We already had some disagreements behind the scenes, there wasn’t a great relationship. I have been working with [Golden Boy] with the other boxers we have had, ‘Chololo’ Larios, ‘Chatito’ Jauregui, and it had been a good relationship. But with Saul we have not had the best relationship in the last few fights. Sometimes there are things that do not work as one would like, but we have characterized ourselves by having discipline and doing our job.
Canelo hasn’t stepped inside the boxing ring since November 2, 2019. He challenged Sergey Kovalev for the vacant WBO Light-Heavyweight Title. Canelo captured the gold via knockout in the 11th round. He ended up relinquishing the championship in favor of moving back down in weight.
Due to his ongoing issues with DAZN and Golden Boy, Canelo isn’t expected to return in 2020. Golden Boy is reportedly hoping to avoid going to court with Canelo and hopes to get him back to action as soon as possible. The WBC has ordered Canelo vs. Avni Yildirim for the vacant WBC Super-Middleweight Championship. The purse bid will commence on September 21.
