What Does Eddie Hearn Have In Mind For Anthony Joshua Vs. Kubrat Pulev?
Due to the unique circumstances the sports world is in due to COVID-19, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn may be interested in playing along. He could very well be interested in experimenting with how he handles a heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev.
Hearn spoke with The Evening Standard about creative ideas for the fight for the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO Heavyweight Championship fight. The bout is being planned for November and previously recommended Royal Albert Hall or Olympia in the UK, areas that can hold 1,000 people. Matchroom’s fearless promoter sounded off a few ideas that could entice people to tune in.
“Other ideas we have are 1,000 people somewhere strange and quirky,” Hearn stated. “I’ve got a few things up my sleeve. We’re talking about castles, plush hotels, maybe even on a boat.”
Joshua (23-1) last fought in December, beating Andy Ruiz Jr. in Saudi Arabia to regain his heavyweight titles. Ruiz took the titles from him back in June 2019 in what was considered an upset. He and Tyson Fury have agreed in principle to fight one another in 2021.
Pulev (28-1) is on an eight-fight win streak following a loss to champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2014. He last fought in 2019, beating Rydell Booker via unanimous decision. The bout between the two was supposed to take place inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June but was postponed due to the coronavirus. Pulev’s manager has recommended Croatia as an option for the bout, something Hearn is considering.
“Croatia have offered a coliseum — and that’s beautiful —and we’re still open to options and flexible,” Hearn went on to say. “These are all things thinking outside of the box — it just depends what’s allowed.”
