What Does Frank Warren Think Of Jose Ramirez vs. Jack Catterall?

Queensberry Promotions head honcho Frank Warren has something to say on a potential clash between Jose Ramirez and Jack Catterall.

Ramirez holds the WBC and WBO Light-Welterweight Titles. He has expressed interest in a title unification bout against Josh Taylor, who is the WBA (Super) and IBF Light-Welterweight Champion. There are two roadblocks when it comes to that fight. Taylor must get past Apinun Khongsong on September 26. Even if that happens, the WBO has given Ramirez a 120-day window to face Catterall or be stripped of the WBO gold.

Taking to The Daily Star, Warren made it clear that the plan is to make a strong push for the WBO to follow through on the mandated title bout.

“Jack Catterall has been patient – now it is his turn to get his world title shot,” Frank Warren. “The classy Chorley light-welterweight is the WBO mandatory contender for Jose Ramirez. And we will push for Catterall to get his chance after he worked hard to get himself into position to fight for the title. Catterall is unbeaten in 25 bouts and, like many, has been waiting to get back in the ring after the coronavirus delays. Ramirez and his team were quick to shout up an undisputed clash with Josh Taylor next after his win over Victor Postol last weekend.”

As Warren mentioned, Ramirez is coming off a successful title defense against Viktor Postol. Ramirez won the bout via majority decision. It was his fourth successful WBC title defense and marked the first time he put the WBO gold on the line.

Time will tell whether or not Ramirez decides to honor the WBO’s mandate or if he goes straight to the Taylor fight if it’s available. Regardless, it appears Catterall is due for a shot at a major championship. The question is, will it be against Ramirez?
