What Does Freddie Roach Think Of Jose Ramirez vs. Viktor Postol?
Renowned trainer Freddie Roach thinks Viktor Postol (31-2) is ready to outclass Jose Ramirez (25-0).
This Saturday, August 29, Ramirez will put his WBC and WBO Light-Welterweight Championships on the line against Postol. The title bout will headline a Top Rank Boxing card. It’ll be held inside the MGM Grand Conference Center, which is dubbed “The Bubble.” Fight fans can catch the action live on ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET for the main card.
Boxing Scene spoke to Roach, who trains Postol and used to train Ramirez, ahead of fight night. Roach explained why he feels Postol will walk out of Las Vegas with two championships.
“He’s [Ramirez] developed into a good body puncher, and he tries to break people down and knock them out toward the end of fights with big hooks and so forth. For us to win the fight, we just have to out-box him and be smarter. That’s all,” Roach said. “You’ve got a boxer and a puncher. We’re the boxer, and that’s how we’re gonna win the fight. We’re gonna out-box him.”
Postol has won his last two outings and if he can make it three in a row, then he’ll become a two-time WBC Light-Welterweight Champion in addition to becoming a WBO titleholder. Postol will be hoping to recapture the magic of his scintillating knockout victory over Lucas Matthysse back on October 3, 2015.
Ramirez has yet to be defeated in his pro boxing career. He’s beaten the likes of Amir Imam, Jose Zepeda, and Maurice Hooker to name a few. If he’s able to get past Postol, then a title unification bout with WBA (Super) and IBF Light-Welterweight Champion Josh Taylor could be due. Taylor must also take care of business on September 26. He’ll be defending his titles against Apinun Khongsong.
