What Does Jermall Charlo’s Trainer Think Of Sergiy Derevyanchenko Fight?
Jermall Charlo’s trainer believes people will attempt to downplay his fighter’s abilities if he handles business against Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
On September 26, Charlo will put his WBC Middleweight Championship on the line against Derevyanchenko. This will be part of a Showtime Boxing doubleheader. Also featured on the card will be Jermall’s brother Jermell competing in a title unification bout at light-middleweight.
Charlo’s trainer, Ronnie Shields, appeared on the PBC Podcast and he expressed his belief that excuses will be made if Derevyanchenko is beaten (h/t Boxing Scene).
“People are going to keep making excuses for Derevyanchenko (if Charlo wins). It’s a no-win situation. It is what it is. After this fight, it’ll be something else. People are going to make excuses for whatever. But Jermall is a world champion and he only fights whoever is put in the ring with him. He doesn’t choose his opponents. He’s been asking for Canelo (Alvarez), he can’t get him. It’s not his fault that he can’t fight the so-called top guys in the division.”
Charlo is putting his perfect 30-0 pro boxing record on the line. In his last bout back on December 7, Charlo successfully defended his WBC Middleweight Championship via seventh-round TKO over Dennis Hogan. It was the 22nd knockout win for Charlo.
Derevyanchenko is coming off a gritty effort against Gennadiy Golovkin back on October 5, 2019. Derevyanchenko ultimately lost the IBF and IBO Middleweight Title fight via unanimous decision. This will be Derevyanchenko’s third major title fight. He has yet to win a major championship.
The action will go down inside an empty Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
