What Does Top Rank President Think Of Canelo Alvarez’s Lawsuit?
Top Rank President Todd DuBoef is weighing in on Canelo Alvarez’s lawsuit against DAZN, Golden Boy Promotions, and Oscar De La Hoya.
Canelo’s relationship with DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions has soured. Boxing’s top star signed an 11-fight, $365 million deal back in the fall of 2018. While things appeared to be rosy at the time, the tide has turned past the midway point of 2020. That’s because DAZN is reportedly unwilling to pay Canelo a $35 million guarantee due to the lack of “premium” opponents.
Speaking to Sky Sports, DuBoef gave his take on the situation between Canelo, DAZN, and Golden Boy.
“It’s not the first time a network, a promoter and a fighter have been at odds. Canelo is obviously one of the biggest attractions in the world and a terrific fighter. The marriage between the smart thinking of DAZN, to get someone who can draw that much attention in the US, was terrific for them. But the economics was a different story. We want to see Canelo back in the ring because his window of opportunity as an athlete gets smaller and smaller. He elevates the sport for all of us. He’s locked up in a relationship and they need to play that out. Hopefully they will work it out civilly and he gets back in the ring.”
A court in California dismissed Canelo’s lawsuit in its current form. That’s because the attorneys for Canelo made an error with how the defendants were designated. Canelo’s legal team has until September 28 to amend the claim and file again.
