What Featherweight Bout Is Looking To Take Place For The UFC In October?
After months of waiting, it appears that Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung will finally face off against one another.
Milenio.com was the first to report that Ortega and “The Korean Zombie” will face one another on October 17 during a UFC Fight Night event. ESPN later reported that it would be the headliner of the card.
Both fighters were supposed to fight on the December 21, 2019 card in South Korea, but Ortega (14-1, 1 NC) had to back out of it due to a torn ACL. Before the injury, Ortega was ready to fight for the first time since December 2018. He was coming off of a loss against Max Holloway at UFC 231 for the UFC Featherweight Championship. Losing via TKO, the fight ended an unbeaten streak dating back to his professional debut in 2010.
Ortega, who is 6-1 with one no-contest in the UFC, recently called out Jung on social media, stating:
“Someone tell Korean zombie sign the contract. You been asked multiple times already. Give the fans what they want to see and quit stalling.”
The two have since continued to call one another out. Ortega had to apologize after getting into a fight with rapper Jay Park, one of Jung’s friends.
Jung (16-5) is on a two-fight win streak. He beat Renato Moicano in June 2019 and Frankie Edgar in December. Edgar was Ortega’s replacement. The 33-year-old has won four straight performance bonuses. He is 3-1 in the UFC since returning from military service in 2017.
As of now, a location for the event has not been announced yet. Traveling concerns due to COVID-19 may be an issue. It appears that Las Vegas and “Fight Island” are in play.
