What Is Kamaru Usman’s Take On Colby Covington vs. Tyron Woodley?
UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman is dishing out on what fight fans could see with Colby Covington vs. Tyron Woodley.
On September 19, Covington and Woodley will collide in a grudge match. The two are former training partners at American Top Team but now they are bitter enemies. Usman has a history with both men. He defeated Woodley via unanimous decision and stopped Covington via fifth-round TKO.
During the UFC Vegas 9 post-fight show, Usman discussed what he thinks of the matchup between Covington and Woodley (via MMAFighting.com).
“I think that this is the best and possibly the worst-case scenario for Tyron Woodley. As far as style matchups, I think this is probably one of the worst stylistic matchups for him after coming off back-to-back fights with guys that love kind of pressure him. Guys that can grapple as well and guys that kind of throw some volume. On the flip side, this is a tremendous matchup for Tyron Woodley because Tyron Woodley is a specialist when it comes to dealing with southpaws. He knows how to angle off, to kind of guide them into that big right hand that he has.”
Not only is this an opportunity for Woodley to settle his beef with Covington but it’s also a chance to snap his two-fight skid. As for Covington, he wants to bounce back after the TKO defeat to Usman. If he can beat Woodley convincingly, he may be on his way to another UFC Welterweight Title opportunity. As for Woodley, he’ll want to at least keep his spot in the top five UFC Welterweight rankings.
