What Is The Status Of Masvidal-Usman?

As the UFC continues to hold events in Florida, many are wondering what the plans are for the company during the summer. Will a certain UFC Welterweight Title fight be included?

A few months ago, it was reported that UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman would face off against BMF Champion Jorge Masvidal sometime in July. This came after the two were a part of a pull-apart brawl during Super Bowl LIV media week. Now, UFC President Dana White might have a different plan in mind for them.

“We’re talking about a few different things,” White stated to ESPN. “We have something else interesting for Masvidal, too, that we were just talking about (on Thursday). We’ll see.”

One of the reasons for the change of heart may be the current uncertainty of the coronavirus. The virus has affected several events, forcing the UFC to move things around. Dana White recently promoted three fight cards happening in May, including 249 that will take place in Jacksonville, Florida. With “Fight Island” in play, events like International Fight Week, which was when the fight was rumored to take place, may be canceled.

“To start speculating down the road right now is too soon,” White went on to say. “Let’s get by these three fights in Florida and we’ll figure out what’s next. We’re talking about different possibilities with those guys.”

Usman (16-1) is coming off of a TKO win against Colby Covington at UFC 245 in December. He suffered a broken hand in the bout, requiring him to take time off to heal.

Masvidal (35-13) last fought in November, beating Nate Diaz at UFC 244 via TKO for the BMF Title. He is currently on a three-fight win streak.
