What Is Tony Ferguson’s Status For UFC 254?
Tony Ferguson’s UFC 254 status has now been made clear.
UFC President Dana White had hopes of booking Ferguson against Dustin Poirier. The UFC boss was leaning towards having the fight take place on the UFC 254 card on October 24. That plan blew up in smoke when Poirier and the UFC couldn’t come to terms on a deal.
Speaking to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter, White revealed that Ferguson is no longer penciled in for the UFC 254 card (h/t MMAJunkie.com).
“They went quiet on us. We couldn’t get a fight done. When I call you and you want to fight (then) fight. If you don’t, no problem. I’m not pushing anybody to fight. … You don’t want to fight? We move on, and we make other fights.”
ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported that the UFC was looking to book Poirier vs. Michael Chandler for the UFC 254 card. In the end, Chandler will serve as a backup for the main event of UFC 254 in case either Khabib Nurmagomedov or Justin Gaethje are forced out of the event. White says Chandler will not be competing at UFC 254 unless he’s needed as a replacement.
Chandler recently signed a UFC contract after testing free agency. He had previously fought under the Bellator banner, becoming a three-time Lightweight Champion with the promotion.
