What Will Dominick Reyes, Jan Blachowicz Be Fighting For?

For the first time in over nine years, the UFC Light Heavyweight Title will be held by someone not named Jon Jones or Daniel Cormier.

ESPN was the first to report that the planned Dominick Reyes v. Jan Blachowicz bout at UFC 253 will be for the vacant light heavyweight title. This comes after Jon Jones announced his intentions to vacate the UFC Light Heavyweight Title, something he has been associated with since 2011.

“It’s official, yeah,” White stated regarding Jones’ future following an episode of the Contender Series, via MMA Fighting. “While we were here, I actually went live on SportsCenter and announced it between one of the fights and announced all of that.

Regarding the Reyes v. Blachowicz fight, White would state, “Yeah, it’s for the vacant title.”

Reyes (12-1) is ranked number one in the UFC’s light heavyweight rankings. Joining the UFC in 2017, Reyes ended up 6-0 before facing Jones in February for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title. The bout at UFC 247 was hard-hitting and deemed controversial by many due to the unanimous decision scoring Jones got.

Blachowicz (26-8) is a former KSW Light Heavyweight Champion. Joining the UFC in 2014, he is 9-5 with the promotion. The 37-year-old from Poland is on a three-fight win streak, last beating Corey Anderson via KO back in February. He is currently ranked third in the UFC Light Heavyweight Rankings.

UFC 253 will be taking place on September 26. As of now, Las Vegas and “Fight Island” are possibilities when it comes to hosting the card. The scheduled main event will be Israel Adesanya defending his UFC Middleweight Title against Paulo Costa.
