What’s Going On Between Canelo Alvarez and DAZN?

It appears the issues between Canelo Alvarez and DAZN, an organization that has paid Canelo over $365 million, have escalated. These issues may have resulted in another bout being potentially nixed for Canelo.

Recently, DAZN requested Canelo (53-1-2) take a pay cut due to the lack of revenue being earned in boxing. This is a result of fans not being allowed to attend events. Meanwhile, Canelo was supposed to fight on September 12 but was unable to find an opponent. It was later revealed that The World Boxing Council ordered a fight between Canelo and Avni Yildirim for the vacant WBC Super-Middleweight TItle. However, according to Boxing Scene, DAZN will not approve the bout to take place.

The WBC Super-Middleweight TItle became vacant when David Benavidez missed weight for his mandatory defense against Roamer Alexis Angulo. Yildirim (33-2-1), who is 6-2 in his last eight fights, was meant to face the winner of Benavidez-Angulo.

Boxing Scene went on to report that DAZN and Canelo would be able to come to an agreement if the licensing fee was fair. They have offered half of the $40 million per fight package that Canelo’s team has been paid for previous DAZN bouts. A fight with Yildirim appears to not count as a premium fight that would warrant the money to be earned.

Canelo (53-1-2) last fought in November, beating Sergey Kovalev for the WBO Light-Heavyweight Title. He has also won gold in the middleweight, welterweight, and light-middleweight divisions. During his time with DAZN, Canelo has fought Rocky Fielding and Daniel Jacobs. One of the premier bouts DAZN has been looking for is Canelo v. Gennadiy Golovkin III. That fight will most likely be taking place in 2021.

Back in May, Canelo was supposed to fight Billy Joe Saunders, but the coronavirus postponed all plans. Saunders has since taken his name out of facing Canelo, for now. A “front-runner” to face Canelo has been Callum Smith.

As far as a future matchup is concerned, DAZN is ready and willing to come to terms with Canelo for him to fight before the end of the year. They are just waiting for negotiations to take place and a proper deal that benefits both.
