What’s Going On With Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim?
The latest information on Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim has surfaced.
The WBC has approved a Super-Middleweight Title fight between Canelo and Yildirim. The championship is currently vacated. A purse bid was originally scheduled for September 21 but that has changed.
In a statement, the WBC announced that the purse bid has been moved to October 6.
“The WBC is officially confirming the postponement of the purse offer ceremony for the Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Avni Yildirim fight for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight championship. The new date has been set for Tuesday October 6 and will be conducted on an open video conference. The WBC has received registration to participate in this process by TUFF Promotions / TUFF Boxing through Mr. Simon Whittle. All parties are hereby notified of the new date.”
The status of Canelo has been up in the air thanks to his lawsuit against DAZN, Golden Boy Promotions, and Oscar De La Hoya. Canelo is alleging a breach of contract. It was reported by The Athletic that DAZN was unwilling to pay Canelo a $35 million guarantee due to the lack of “premium” opponents. Canelo’s lawsuit must be amended by September 28 or his claim will be thrown out due to an error in the filing.
