What’s Next For Petr Yan Following UFC 251 Win?
Last weekend at UFC 251, Petr Yan fulfilled his destiny by becoming the UFC Bantamweight Champion. At 27, the Russian fighter believes the best is yet to come. Who should face the champion now that he has been crowned?
Following the fight against Jose Aldo on “Fight Island”, Yan (15-1) discussed who he believes the next challenger should be. Looking at the standings and who is available, Yan chose a man many expected would face him for the title instead of Aldo.
“I think October will be a perfect time,” Yan said regarding when he’s likely to come back, via MMA Fighting. “I think Aljamain Sterling deserves to fight for the title. He’s on a good streak and beat a lot of good guys.”
Sterling (19-3) only needed one round to take out Cory Sandhagen at UFC 250. This came after months of being away due to surgery. Ranked second in the UFC’s bantamweight rankings, “Funk Master” is currently on a five-fight win streak. He has been making his case for a title shot, seeing how busy everyone in the division appears to be. The number one ranked fighter, Marlon Moraes, may be out of action for a while after testing positive for COVID-19.
Ray Longo, Sterling’s coach, recently stated that Sterling should not sign a fight contract unless it is a title opportunity. If the champion had his say, Sterling would most likely sign the contract to face him right away.
Yan (15-1) is on a ten-fight win streak and is 7-0 in the UFC. He pummeled Aldo in the fifth round of their fight to become champion. The title was vacant after Henry Cejudo relinquished the belt after retiring.
