What’s Next For Robert Whittaker Following ‘Fight island’ Win?
Rejuvenated, it appears that Robert Whittaker is ready to become a force in the middleweight division again. In his way may be a rising star.
ESPN was the first to report that Whittaker (21-5) will face off against Jared Cannonier at UFC 254. The event is scheduled for October 24.
Whittaker is coming off of a win against Darren Till on July 26 during the last “Fight Island” event for the UFC. It was a rebound following a loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 in October. Not only did the loss end his nine-fight win streak, but he lost the UFC Middleweight Title in the process.
Cannonier (13-4) is currently on a three-fight win streak. He last fought in September, beating Jack Hermansson via second-round TKO. After a run at light heavyweight in which he went 2-3, Cannonier beat David Branch, Anderson Silva (hurting his leg in the process), and Hermansson.
Cannonier is ranked third in the UFC’s middleweight rankings, while Whittaker is still ranked first.
UFC 254 does not have a set location yet. Las Vegas or “Fight Island” are the current options at the moment. The main event of UFC 254 will feature UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov v. interim champion Justin Gaethje in a unification bout.
