What’s The Latest On Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez?

There is major movement in the Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez showdown.

Lomachenko is the WBA (Super) and WBO Lightweight Champion. Lopez holds the IBF gold. The two are in for a title unification clash but to this point, all had been reported. It was only a matter of time before pen was put to paper. That time is now.

The official Twitter account of Top Rank Boxing revealed that both Lomachenko and Lopez have signed the contract for a big title clash.

While Top Rank will be unveiling more details shortly, Mike Coppinger of The Athletic reported that Lomachenko vs. Lopez will be taking place on October 17. While many believed a matchup of this magnitude would make its way to pay-per-view, the report notes that it’ll be broadcast on the major ESPN network.

Lomachenko goes into his highly-anticipated battle with Lopez sporting a 14-1 pro boxing record. He hasn’t been beaten since his second pro bout back on March 1, 2014. As for Lopez, he has been perfect with a record of 15-0. This will be his first defense of the IBF Lightweight Title.

Lopez’s father recently stirred the pot, expressing confidence in his son’s ability to unseat Lomachenko (courtesy of Boxing Scene).

“I believe my son is faster than Lomachenko, I believe my son is smarter than Lomchenko, and I believe my son is stronger. So he has everything to beat Lomachenko. Lomachenko is used to winning. He’s used to lining people with all of these things that he does in the ring but that’s not going to faze my son. My son has no respect for him … My son is going to beat him so bad that Lomachenko is going to be out for months, or a year or so. He’s going to be devastated.”
