What’s The Status Of Tony Ferguson’s Next Fight?
With Dustin Poirier off the table, there is a new status update for Tony Ferguson’s next outing.
UFC President Dana White was hoping to book Ferguson against Poirier for UFC 254. The bout would’ve been featured on the same card being headlined by a UFC Lightweight Title unification bout between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim titleholder Justin Gaethje.
The problem is that Poirier and the UFC couldn’t come to terms on a deal. Speaking to reporters following an edition of his Tuesday Night Contender Series, White gave a status update on Ferguson’s next fight (h/t MMAFighting.com).
“I told you, we got a fight.”
White went on to say that the bout isn’t official but he expects to be able to reveal something soon. An opponent wasn’t named.
“Not yet, no. He will. I don’t see Tony not accepting a fight.”
White went on to say that while he doesn’t want to throw shade at Poirier, he isn’t convinced that “The Diamond” truly wanted to fight “El Cucuy” at this time.
“Listen, I like Dustin. I’m not going to sit up here and say anything negative about Dustin. He’s a great kid. I don’t know if it was he didn’t want to fight in Abu Dhabi or what his deal was, he didn’t want to fight. There’s a lot of different ways to turn down a fight.
“Negotiating yourself out of one is one of the ways you can do it. So for whatever reason, he didn’t want to take this fight. Only he knows that.”
Poirier made it clear on his Twitter account that he disagrees with White’s take.

Regardless of who Ferguson faces next, the goal remains the same. He hopes to rebound after suffering his first defeat in eight years. “El Cucuy” was finished by Justin Gaethje via fifth-round TKO back on May 9.
For Poirier, he wants to build off his “Fight of the Year” candidate against Dan Hooker. Poirier won that bout via unanimous decision.
