When Does Anthony Joshua Want To Fight Again?

Anthony Joshua doesn’t plan to rest on his laurels for much longer.

Joshua is the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO Heavyweight Champion. He was preparing for a June 20 showdown with Kubrat Pulev in London but the coronavirus pandemic shut down that plan. Fans have been left to eagerly anticipate a new date for the title bout.

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn spoke to the Sun and revealed that Joshua doesn’t want 2020 to come to a close without having a fight (via Boxing Scene).

“AJ wants to fight this year and he will fight,” Hearn stated.

“Hopefully by December we will be in a situation where we can have a full, or close-to-full, O2. Because when you talk about no crowds causing a hole in budgets, his is around £5 million. But he will fight, he has to, otherwise, it will be a year out of the ring. We have to get him back in 2020.

“I would put him on behind closed doors now, yes. The numbers wouldn’t be as good but he is prepared to do it.”

Hearn went on to note that the plan is to keep pushing for the Pulev bout. The hope with Joshua’s team is that he gets past Pulev and that WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury defeats Deontay Wilder in a trilogy bout to set up a title unification showdown. Joshua and Fury have agreed to terms, which hinges on the results of both of their upcoming bouts.

Joshua’s last bout was his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr. Joshua got his revenge over Ruiz and regained all the gold, bouncing back from his shocking seventh-round TKO loss to the “Destroyer” in early June 2019. Once Joshua returns to the boxing ring, the task at hand will be to avoid another upset so he can get the “superfight” fans have been craving for years.
