When Will Devin Haney Fight Again?
All eyes will be on the WBC Lightweight Title situation, as Luke Campbell and Ryan Garcia are expected to fight to determine who faces champion Devin Haney. Will Haney be competing beforehand, however?
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn ended up telling ESPN’s Steve Kim that Haney is expected to fight sometime between the last week of September and early October. As far as an opponent is concerned, Hearn stated that Yuriokis Gamboa could end up getting a title shot.
Haney (24-0) made his professional debut in 2015. The 21-year-old beat Zaur Abdullaev for the interim WBC Lightweight Championship in September. He was then promoted to full-time champion after Vasiliy Lomachnko was promoted to “franchise” champion. Haney was then sidelined due to shoulder surgery in November, forcing him to become “champion in recess” as a result.
A fight between Javier Fortuna and Luke Campbell for the title was planned until Haney was reinstated as the champion. Campbell has his fight against Ryan Garcia while Fortuna will now face Jorge Linares on a Golden Boy card set for the end of August.
Gamboa (30-3) last fought in December, losing to Gervonta Davis via TKO. Hurt through the bout, Gamboa failed to capture the WBA Lightweight Title. A former WBA Featherweight and interim Champion, Gamboa was on a four-fight win streak before the loss.
Haney has been looking into a Gamboa fight for a while. It is a battle of youth v. experience. The next few matchups for Haney could end up being the last at lightweight for him. Haney has been considering moving up to 140 and even as high as 154.
