When Will Jamel Herring Face Off Against Jonathan Oquendo?

After multiple attempts to get this specific fight done, it appears that Jamel Herring is ready to return to action.

According to ESPN’s Steve Kim, WBO Junior-Lightweight Champion Jamel Herring will face off against Jonathan Oquendo on September 5. If official, it will take place inside the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“That would be enough time to bring that fight back under any circumstances, he would be free of any particles and so forth,” Top Rank’s Bob Arum stated.

Herring (21-2) was supposed to face Oquendo (31-6) on July 2 before initially testing positive for the coronavirus. Stating he was only 90% ready to go before the rebooked fight on July 14, the former Marine tested positive for a second time. As a result, Mikaela Mayer and Helen Joseph would end up headlining the card. A few days later, Herring would provide a negative test.

Making his professional debut in 2012, Herring is currently on a five-fight win streak, winning the WBO Junior-Welterweight Title against Masayuki Ito in May 2019. He defended it in November, beating Lamont Roach Jr. via unanimous decision.

The fight would line up at a perfect time for a future matchup. Carl Frampton is scheduled to compete on August 15 against Vahram Vardanyan. The former IBF and WBA Super-Bantamweight and interim WBO Featherweight Champion in Frampton (27-2) last fought in November, beating Tyler McCreary via unanimous decision. The two could end up facing off before the end of the year if all goes according to plan.
