When Will Mikaela Mayer Fight Again?
It appears we are one step closer to seeing a unification bout between Top Rank and Matchroom Boxing.
Boxing Scene was the first to confirm that Mikaela Mayer and Ewa Brodnicka will face off for the latter’s WBO Junior-Lightweight Title. The two have agreed to terms after the WBO ordered a fight between them. As a result, a purse bid was avoided.
This would be Mayer’s (13-0) first world title bout. The NABF Super-Featherweight Champion made her boxing debut in 2017. She recently fought in July, beating Helen Joseph via unanimous decision. Top Rank’s Bob Arum was impressed with the Olympic fighter following the bout, stating Mayer’s next fight would be for gold.
Just signing a promotional deal with Matchroom, Brodnicka (19-0) won the WBO Super-Featherweight Title (then interim) in 2017 against Irma Adler. Brodnicka has defended the title six times. Brodnicka last fought in March, beating Djemilla Gontaruk via unanimous decision.
The idea of the two fighting one another would result in the winner facing off against Terri Harper. Calling her out all over social media, Mayer believes that she can take down the young Harper (10-0-1). The WBC and IBO Super-Featherweight Champion in Harper fought Natasha Jonas to a split decision draw a few weeks ago in a fight to remember. It is unknown if the two will end up facing off in a rematch.
An official date has not been announced yet for the fight between Mayer and Brodnicka. The MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas may end up being the location.
