Where To Watch: Danny Garcia Vs. Jose Benavidez Jr Tonight
Tonight, from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Danny “Swift” Garcia will make his long-awaited return after a prolonged layoff, following his loss to Errol Spence Jr in 2020. In this bout, Garcia’s junior middleweight debut, he will be tested versus none other than Jose “Merciless” Benavidez Jr, the former welterweight title contender.
Benavidez (27-1-1, 18 KO) made his first appearance in the 154-pound division back in November 2021, in a battle with Francisco Emanuel Torres of Argentina, which ended in a majority draw. Prior to his first junior middleweight showing, he suffered the first and only loss in his career by way of a TKO in the final round of his match with Terence Crawford, the current WBO welterweight champion.
In addition to being a former two division world champion, Garcia (36-3, 21 KO) has also faced his share of adversity in the ring. He has suffered losses in tough battles with top competitors such as Errol Spence Jr, Shawn Porter, and Keith Thurman. Conversely, he has celebrated career defining victories over the likes of Erik Morales, Zab Judah, and Amir Khan, who he stopped in the fourth round.
In a match that is make or break for the careers of tonight’s main event fighters, both feel confident in their abilities, and have the resumes to back up that confidence. Garcia believes he is stronger and has more stamina now than he did in the welterweight division, and following the long layoff he is looking to prove that he belongs among the top contenders at 154-pounds. Benavidez feels that his last two performances did not truly showcase what he has to offer and is looking to update the narrative surrounding his career.
