Which UFC Fighters Are Off Of ‘Fight island’ After Testing Positive For COVID-19?
The UFC recently implemented new testing procedures before opening up “Fight Island” for UFC 251 on July 11. With three other events planned, several fighters are taking precautions to plan accordingly. It appears to be working so far, as two fighters have been pulled from the same show.
MMA Fighting was the first to report that Anderson dos Santos is off of his July 15 bout against Jack Shore due to a positive COVID-19 test. Quarantined in Brazil before heading to Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, dos Santos (20-8) was tested (one of five times), with results coming back positive.
It is unknown if Shore will be getting a new opponent. The 34-year-old dos Santos is looking for his first UFC win. Making his debut with the promotion in 2018, dos Santos has lost to Nad Narimani and Andre Ewell, the last fight in June 2019. His coach also tested positive for the coronavirus.
Besides dos Santos, MMA Fighting was able to report that Vinicius Moreira is out of his bout against Modestas Bukauskas. Moreira (9-4) also was tested in Sao Paulo, with his results coming back positive. After impressing on Dana White’s Contender Series, “Mamute” is on a three-fight losing streak. In three fights in 2019, the 31-year-old has lost to Alonzo Menifield, Eryk Anders, and Paul Craig. It is also unknown if Bukauskas will be getting a new opponent for his bout.
Major testing has been performed since Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza tested positive right before UFC 249.
The main event of the UFC’s fight night event on July 15 will be Dan Ige against Calvin Kattar.
