White Doesn’t Want McGregor-Malignaggi

After his TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather two months ago, UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor contemplated his future, stating he was open to both boxing and MMA. But weeks ago at a Q&A, McGregor hinted that he was looking to the UFC for his next bout, stating a need to legitimize his UFC title run.

But talks of McGregor boxing again are still around, as are rumors McGregor could end up in a boxing match with Paulie Malignaggi. Malignaggi was helping McGregor train for the “Money Fight” when he infamously left the camp. Brief footage of McGregor sparring with, and supposedly knocking down, Malignaggi was released, and Malignaggi went on a social media rampage to ensure that no one got the idea that McGregor outboxed him in the gym.

Malignaggi recently stated he’d go as far as to not only fight McGregor, but also fight McGregor’s teammate Artem Lobov on the same night.

But UFC President Dana White doesn’t want to hear any of it, stating on a recent edition of the Real Quick with Mike Swick podcast that McGregor belongs in the UFC.

“Do you think people really want to see Conor vs. Paulie Malignaggi? People want to see Conor fight in MMA. That’s what they want to see. The Mayweather fight was a one-off, ******* crazy deal. This is where he belongs, this is the sport he’s in, this is the sport he excels in and this is where he’s a world champion. This is where he needs to be.”

And all these months later, White is sticking with his story that McGregor outperformed Malignaggi in the controversial sparring exhibition.

“Why did Paulie Malignaggi get up and walk out of camp after two sparring sessions? Because it was the right ******* thing to do. Because he was going to get hurt, because he was going to take damage that was going to affect him for the rest of his life that he didn’t need to ******* take. It’s not like they were paying him big money or he had a ******* fight coming up himself.”

McGregor’s next fight hasn’t been confirmed, but it is likely that he will face interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson. The two teased the potential match-up on Twitter recently.
