Throughout the entire journey just to get UFC 249 to happen as a result of the coronavirus, UFC President Dana White stated the company would be doing everything possible to keep fights alive. That includes holding fights on an island. It appears that we may have our first bout scheduled for “Fight Island“, just a few days after UFC 249.
White told ESPN 1000 Chicago that he is looking to book an undisputed UFC Lightweight Title fight between Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champion Justin Gaethje. He is hoping the fight can happen during the summer.
“I don’t know if it will be the first one, but it will be on Fight Island, unless miraculously the world comes back together faster than I think it’s gonna,” White stated, via ESPN. “Hopefully it will be done by mid-June, and I could put on a fight that weekend that it’s done or end of June.”
“Fight Island” became a reality as a result of international fighters not being able to enter the United States due to travel restrictions. On an undisclosed location, the island will feature a full training facility as well as an arena.
The island was necessary due to Nurmagomedov (28-0) not being able to appear at UFC 249. Due to gyms across the United States closing down and a lack of location for the original UFC 249, he decided to stay in Russia to quarantine, where there are also travel limitations. Currently observing Ramadan, Nurmagomedov has expressed an interest to return to action by either July or September.
Gaethje (22-2) just beat Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 to win the interim title. Landing over 100 significant strikes, “The Highlight’s” left hook was able to badly bruise the face of Ferguson. The referee called the fight off in the fifth round following a few hard shots, awarding Gaethje the win. Ferguson ended up suffering an orbital bone fracture in the fight. As for Gaethje, he appeared to have hurt his hand and could be ready by September, according to Sherdog.
Who do you think would win a bout between Nurmagomedov and Gaethje?
