White: McGregor Wants Khabib After Mayweather
While Conor McGregor prepares for an August boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, the UFC lightweight division is on hold waiting for its champion. While some question whether McGregor will even fight in the UFC again after getting the Mayweather payday, UFC President Dana White is confident he will be back by the end of the year.
In fact, White says that McGregor has a bold preference for his next UFC bout.
In an interview with MMAJunkie, White said that McGregor told him he wants to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov in the Russian’s home country.
“You know what Conor told me? He said, ‘I want Khabib in Russia,’” White said. “Isn’t he (expletive) awesome? He’s like, ‘I want Khabib, in Russia.’ He’s awesome. Conor McGregor is a (expletive) unicorn. There’s nothing like him. He’s working on boxing Floyd Mayweather and then he’s talking about fighting Khabib in Russia right after.”
The UFC has yet to hold an event in Russia, but Nurmagomedov is the kind of local star that could bring them there. He will likely have to fight Tony Ferguson for the interim title while he waits for McGregor, though. That fight was set for UFC 209 in March, but Nurmagomedov pulled out a day before the fight due to weight cutting issues.
