White: Talked About Cancelling UFC 223

After one of the craziest weeks leading up to an event, UFC 223 will go on with nine bouts — rather than the scheduled 13.

As reported by Bloody Elbow, UFC President Dana White said there was a chance UFC 223 may not have happened tonight. After three bouts were canceled following an attack by Conor McGregor, and the UFC 223 main event went into a fiasco after multiple potential challengers falling out, White said he had to consider the option.

“When you start looking at losing the main event — we lost three fights yesterday — it definitely was talked about,” White said.

A bout between Michael Chiesa and Anthony Pettis and a bout between Ray Borg and Brandon Moreno were canceled after the attack. Artem Lobov was pulled from his fight with Alex Caceres because of his role in the attack.

Tony Ferguson was removed from the UFC 223 main event with Khabib Nurmagomedov following a freak injury, and replacement Max Holloway pulled due to weight-cut issues.

But at the end of the day, White decided the show must go on.

At the end of the day, fans bought tickets, there’s people that flew in from other states and other countries. You gotta roll, man. You gotta figure it out and get on with the show. So here we are, and we’ll be here tomorrow night.
