Who Could Vasiliy Lomachenko End Up Reportedly Fighting?
Backup plans can help secure interest in fights, even if it is not what was originally booked. If a fight between Teofimo Lopez and Vasiliy Lomachenko ends up getting nixed, Top Rank may have another matchup in mind for the latter.
Recently, talks of a Lopez v. Lomachenko fight have hit a standstill. Lopez rejected an offer in recess of $1.2 million for a fight, and would now make less if he is “resigned” to defend his IBF Lightweight Title against another opponent. This comes after the two were scheduled to clash on October 3. Bob Arum has stated he won’t break the bank for Lopez and could end up booking a new contender for the WBA, WBO, and WBC Lightweight Champion in Lomachenko, if necessary.
According to The Ring, Lomachenko (14-1) could end up facing Felix Verdejo.
The 27-year-old Verdejo (27-1) is a former WBO Latino Lightweight Champion. He has fought twice in 2020 so far; Verdejuo beat Manuel Rey Rojas back in January and recently fought on July 16, beating Will Madera via TKO. The fight ended in the first round, cementing himself as a huge threat.
A fight with Lomachenko would be a rematch for Verdejo, who lost to Lomachenko in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Olympics.
Lomachenko won gold in his first professional fight in 2013. He ended up winning the WBO Featherweight Title in his third fight. Holding junior-featherweight gold, “Loma” won the WBA Lightweight Title from Jorge Linares. A WBO Champion, Lomachenko last fought Luke Campbell in August, where he won the WBC Lightweight Title.
David McWater, Lopez’s manager, is ready to move on from Lomachenko if a deal is not made that they can both appreciate.
With time left until the October date, stay tuned for more information regarding the Top Rank-produced fight.
