Who Does Daniel Cormier Think Nick Diaz Should Fight In UFC Return?
Daniel Cormier is chiming in on who he believes Nick Diaz should be matched up with upon his potential UFC return.
Late over the past weekend, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported that Diaz is looking to make a return to the Octagon in 2021. Diaz’s manager, Kevin Mubenga, informed Helwani that the Stockton native was testing the waters with weight cuts in order to get back in the groove ahead of his planned comeback.
During an edition of the DC & Helwani Show, Cormier played matchmaker for Diaz’s first fight back (via BJPenn.com).
“Put Nick Diaz in there with Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards. This would be a great fight, and if he, if Nick Diaz can stop the run of Leon, of ‘Rocky’, maybe Nick Diaz gets that title shot. I think that’s the fight. Don’t do ‘Rocky’ like that. Let him get a big-time fight.“
Diaz hasn’t fought professionally since January 31, 2015. He initially lost to Anderson Silva via unanimous decision but the result was changed to a No Contest after “The Spider” failed a drug test. Diaz was initially suspended for four years due to popping for marijuana but the suspension was greatly reduced after the Nevada State Athletic Commission received a considerable amount of backlash.
Edwards has seemingly been in limbo since a unanimous decision victory over Rafael dos Anjos back on July 20, 2019. “Rocky” was going to fight former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in London but the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to that plan. Edwards has been clamoring to put a rest to his rivalry with Jorge Masvidal, who is in talks of having a rematch with Nick’s brother Nate.
