UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya has an opponent, or two, in mind once UFC 253 wraps up.
Adesanya is scheduled to put his 185-pound gold on the line against Paulo Costa on September 26. This will be “The Last Stylebender’s” second UFC Middleweight Title defense. There is bad blood brewing between the two but Adesanya also isn’t afraid to discuss who he’d like to fight after UFC 253.
Appearing on Submission Radio, Adesanya said that a showdown with Darren Till or even Jared Cannonier could be enticing (h/t BJPenn.com).
“I hope Cannonier beats Robert, cause I want a new body,” Adesanya said. “Jack Hermansson, I don’t really mind too much. But I’d like Darren to get that one done, but he didn’t really get it done [in his last fight] against Robert. It was a good fight, close fight, but I think maybe the takedowns gave it to Robert. Who knows. But yeah, the Jack Hermansson and Darren Till fight, I don’t really mind. But Cannonier, I hope Cannonier whoops his ass. I want to fight that guy, I like him.”
Till is scheduled to meet Jack Hermansson on December 5. “The Gorilla” will be hoping to rebound from his unanimous decision loss to former UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker.
As for Cannonier, he’ll share the octagon with Robert Whittaker on October 24. The winner may be next in line for a shot at Adesanya’s title. If Whittaker emerges victorious, the UFC may end up going with the winner of Till vs. Hermansson as Adesanya stopped Whittaker via second-round TKO back in October 2019.
Adesanya’s pro MMA record stands at a perfect 19-0. He was last seen inside the octagon back in March, defeating Yoel Romero via unanimous decision.
Costa is also undefeated. His record is 13-0 and like Adesanya, Costa also holds a win over Romero. It was the first time Costa went the distance in an MMA bout.
