Who Does Mayweather Believe Is Boxing’s Pound-For-Pound King?
For years, Floyd Mayweather was one of the top fighters in the world. With a 50-0 record, “Money” Mayweather has faced and beaten the best. He has also held a lot of gold, winning fifteen major titles, including the lineal championship in four weight classes. Now, he watches the future of boxing every time he steps into an arena.
Who does he think is the best right now and can be regarded as the future of the sport?
Speaking at a Q&A with fans in Rotherham, Mayweather gave a two-part answer. First, he made sure to promote one of his star pupils.
“Right now, if I had to say a guy who’s the number one pound-for-pound… It’s two guys. The most exciting fighter in boxing right now is Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. He’s the most exciting. At the end of the day, I think he has 22-0 wins with 21 knockouts. Hands down Gervonta Davis is the most exciting fighter in the sport right now.”
Davis (23-0) is the current WBA Lightweight Champion as well as the WBA and IBF Super-Featherweight Champion. At 25, Davis has a dynamic presence. His last fight was a TKO win over rival Yuriorkis Gamboa back in December. Davis is currently represented by Mayweather Promotions.
While he is one of the most exciting fighters out there, Davis is also the most controversial. He was recently charged in a domestic violence case. He is being looked into for a potential Ryan Garcia fight.
When it came to overall pound-for-pound, Floyd picked a fighter that currently resides over at Top Rank.
“Pound-for-pound, I would have to say Terence Crawford,” Mayweather went on to say.
“Bud” Crawford (36-0) is the current WBO Welterweight Champion. Before winning the title in 2018 off of Jeff Horn, Crawford was the WBO, WBC, the Ring and lineal Light-Welterweight Champion. He also held junior-welterweight gold. Crawford won two fights in 2019; against Amir Khan and Egidijus Kavaliauskas, both inside Madison Square Garden.
Potential opponents for Crawford include Manny Pacquiao and Kell Brook.
