Who Does UFC Bantamweight Frankie Edgar Want To Fight?
Frankie Edgar has finally debuted at bantamweight and he’s looking for a “legacy fight.”
Edgar is a former UFC Lightweight Champion and was always at the top of the heap in the featherweight division. Still, many called for “The Answer” to make the journey to 135 pounds. He did so on August 22 against Pedro Munhoz. Edgar was awarded the split decision victory. It’s Edgar’s first win since April 21, 2018.
Edgar appeared as a guest on Bruce Buffer’s It’s Time Podcast. During his appearance, Edgar explained why a fight with former UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz would get him excited (h/t MMAFighting.com).
“Another guy that’s also a little older and a legend himself is Dominick Cruz,” Edgar said. “A lot of people are still talking about that, so I’m definitely interested. The title is obviously my main goal, where my sight’s on, but it doesn’t have to be right away. I’m willing to fight some of those legacy fights as well.”
Edgar went on to say that he thinks Cruz plays the cat and mouse game to a tee. “The Answer” said he’s well aware that Cruz often uses his counter-striking to thwart opponents who try to chase him. On the flip side, Edgar also said he wouldn’t want Cruz chasing him down either.
Cruz hasn’t competed since his May 9 loss to Henry Cejudo. It was Cruz’s bid to become a three-time UFC Bantamweight Champion. Due to injuries, Cruz has found himself mostly inactive over the past few years. He’s had three fights in the past four years and has gone 1-2 in that span.
As for Edgar, he finds himself holding the number five spot on the UFC bantamweight rankings after his successful 135-pound debut. Cruz is down at the number 11 position. If he can stay healthy, then one big win could shoot “The Dominator” back up the bantamweight ladder.
