Who Is Jessie Magdaleno Interested In Fighting Against?
Riding a wave of momentum, Jessie Magdaleno is looking to once again compete for a world title. The former WBO Junior-Featherweight Champion has a few names in mind when it comes to his next big challenge, one that he shared the spotlight with a few weeks ago.
Speaking with Boxing Scene, Magdaleno (28-1) discussed the idea of facing Shakur Stevenson. The current WBO Featherweight Champion is looking for someone to challenge him, and Magdaleno believes he can be that fighter.
“I fear nobody,” Magdaleno stated. “At the end of the day, it’s my job to go in there and kick ass. It’ll be a great fight between me and Shakur. A lot of people think he runs, and he moves too much and all that. But you’ve just gotta play it smart and use all your ability that you can to fight a type of fighter like that. That’d be another great fight that I would look forward to.”
Top Rank returned to action last week from inside the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. On Tuesday, June 9, Stevenson (14-0) took care of Felix Caraballo via TKO in his first fight since October. Magdaleno would face Yenifel Vicente that Thursday. Following repeated low blows, one which resulted in a late knockdown, Vicente ended up losing via DQ. It was Magdaleno’s third win in a row following a loss to Isaac Dogboe in 2018.
Recently, Stevenson is considering moving up in weight to test himself. The 22-year-old has been compared to Floyd Mayweather by his peers. If he was to do so, that would leave the WBO Title, the belt he beat Joet Gonzalez for, open for the taking. Magdaleno has an idea in place if he was given the opportunity to fight for the title.
“If Stevenson is gonna vacate it, that leaves me and Mick Conlan to go after it,” Magdaleno went on to say. “And that’s another great fight to go after because we both throw a lot of punches and we’re both very talented fighters.”
Conlan (13-0) is the current WBO Inter-Continental Featherweight Champion. He is another Top Rank fighter that generates a buzz. Another fighter Magdaleno is interested in is Gary Russell Jr., the current WBC Featherweight Champion. It is unknown which fight Magdaleno would take first if given the option.
